Smells Like Freshman Spirit

Or, What are 18 Year Old College Freshman Like Today? 

Every Year Beloit College does an environmental scan to encapsulate what the incoming 18 year old freshmen have and have not been exposed to in their lifetimes.  

Warning: The Above List Will Suck Whatever Youth You Were Feeling Right Out of Your Body, Mind and Spirit.

While I am not, this list makes me feel old. A lot of us were freshly mourning Kurt Cobain's death when we were their age, but to realize that Nirvana is being played on "oldies" stations, really? I can't quite wrap my head around that.  It wasn't that long ago, was it?? Courtney Love is still running around creating mayhem, isn't she?  

Grunge aside, the list justifies my job in saying,  

"They will now be awash with a computerized technology that will not distinguish information and knowledge. So it will be up to their professors to help them.  A generation accustomed to instant access will need to acquire the patience of scholarship. They will discover how to research information in books and journals and not just on-line."  

Sounds like a job for the academic librarians!!  To the library!
